Van Polen, who was born in Nijkerk, Netherlands, began his career with amateur club VVOG before joining PEC Zwolle in 2005. He quickly became a regular in the team and was named captain in 2012. He was a key member of the PEC Zwolle side that won the KNVB Cup in 2014, and he also helped the club to qualify for the Europa League in 2015.
